Will dermaplaning make my facial peach fuzz grow back thicker or darker?
No. This is a common biological myth. Dermaplaning shears off fine vellus hair at the surface of the stratum corneum without altering the subcutaneous hair follicle or hair bulb. Because the hair is cut with a sharp surgical edge, it may feel blunt for the first 48 hours as it begins to emerge, but it will grow back with the exact same soft texture, diameter, and light color as before.
Are your chemical peels safe for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI)?
Absolutely. Melanin-rich skin requires specialized care to prevent Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Abby uses gentle, progressive formulations containing mandelic acid (a large 8-carbon molecule that penetrates slowly and evenly) combined with lactic acid and tyrosinase inhibitors (alpha-arbutin, licorice root). We avoid aggressive high-percentage glycolic acid or deep wounding on darker skin types.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please discontinue prescription retinoids (Tretinoin, Retin-A, Differin) and active AHA/BHA exfoliants 5 to 7 days prior to any facial or peel. Avoid direct sunbathing or waxing for 1 week. Arriving with clean, bare skin is appreciated, although a double cleanse is always performed as part of every protocol.
What is the difference between "purging" and a breakout?
Purging occurs when accelerated cellular turnover (from active enzymes or mandelic peel solutions) rapidly brings existing micro-comedones underneath the surface to maturity. Purging always occurs in areas where you typically experience congestion and resolves within 7 to 10 days. A true adverse reaction manifests as itching, hives, or bumps in completely new areas.
Can I receive treatments while pregnant or nursing?
Yes! We offer completely pregnancy-safe modifications. We substitute all salicylic acid, chemical retinoids, and high-frequency electrical modalities with pregnancy-safe lactic acid, fruit enzymes, dermaplaning, hyaluronic acid oxygen infusions, and red LED light therapy.
Where is the studio located and where do I park?
Esthetics by Abby is located in Old Town Scottsdale at 412 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 204. Complimentary guest parking is available in the dedicated lot directly behind the building. When you arrive, enter through the main glass atrium and take the elevator to the second floor.
